Vicky woke up with a start, sitting up and spitting hair out of her mouth. It was dark all around her, with only moonlight streaming in from the open windows above her head.
She was sitting on the carpeted floor, her face and neck damp. It seemed that someone had tried to wake her up by sprinkling water on her face.
“Hey, how do you feel?” asked a deep voice from across the room.
Vicky looked around until her eyes landed on a tall figure by the open door. It was left ajar as he walked up to her and crouched down.
Vick’s breath hitched as she recognized Levi. He impatiently brushed the hair off his face, something she’d rarely seen him do. The room was dark, and she could see little except for his face.
“Should I call a doctor?” He asked concern lacing his words. It was a risky move to pursue at a house party. All of them could end up in jail.
She shook her head. It was quiet where she was and the room didn’t smell of alcohol. The window was open and she could see a balcony behind her. The crowded party seemed to be miles away, even though she could make out some catchy tunes blaring downstairs. Up here in the darkness, she didn’t feel feel boxed in or pressurized to socialize.
Wait. Didn’t that mean she was upstairs? Who had brought her there? She recalled collapsing on the stairs with Levi standing in front of her. Did that mean he had carried her here?
A hot blush splashed across her cheeks and she was inherently glad that it was only a half moon night and he couldn’t really tell the colour of her face.
Vicky willed herself not to panic. This is what she had been waiting most of her life for. Right here and now, she was with someone she could potentially fall in love with.
“Thank you.” she said surprising herself by not stuttering.
Levi sighed. “No problem.” He said scrubbing his hands over his eyes.
Now that Vicky was close enough to notice, he did look rather tired. His dimple reappeared as he gave her a small smile
“So claustrophobic huh?” he asked sitting cross legged beside her. He grinned and Vicky’s stomach took a horrid turn. She felt as though her insides were performing somersaults.
“Y-yes.” she managed, blushing even redder. She probably looked like a baked sweet potato right now. So much for being sexy.
“So Samthon mentioned a pretty girl wanted to speak to me.” He said a smirk playing on his lips. “It’s a first for someone to request for me when he is available.” He laughed and Vicky had to wonder how anyone could manage not to have a crush on him.
“I I I —” and the stammering was back. Her blood pressure shot up and she broke into cold sweat. Rivulets dripped from her forehead as she struggled to control her breathing.
He probably didn’t have the patience to deal with her. Tears filled her eyes as she realized her romantic pursuits had turned to dust before they even began.
“It’s okay, take deep breaths” he said instead his voice effortlessly calm. He took a piece of string from his jeans pocket and reached behind her head, carefully tying up her long hair. The cool air kissed her neck and she felt slightly better.
He was mindful not to touch her, but couldn’t prevent the slight brush of his fingers on her neck as he moved away.
“You have a fever.” He said looking worried. ” I should call a doctor. It’s going to be midnight anyway. It’s time for this party to break up.”
“No no.” She said shaking her head. Damn it her nervousness was ruining everything.
“Is it because of me?” He asked suddenly, a new light in his eyes. “Could it be that you are having a panic attack?”
Vicky gaped. No one ever deduced the cause of her behaviour correctly. But Levi had done so within minutes of knowing her.
“Really?” He asked standing up and taking his place by the balcony, a far enough distance to keep her at ease. “Is this better?”
Vicky nodded still seated but turned around to face him, deciding that she would tell him the truth.
“I I get-nervous-talking-to-boys” she said quickly. It was best if he knew. It was best if he was judgemental now and broke her heart before—
“Oh.” He said his mouth forming the word articulately. Vicky couldn’t help but wonder what those lips would taste like.
“Wow.” He said grinning widely. “This is not something you expect at a high school booze fest. What a breath of fresh air.”
Vicky chuckled despite her situation and in the half light managed not to swoon when Levi ran his hands through his messy hair.
“I I—shit.” She started and stopped. It was funny how she didn’t stutter when it came to expletives.
Levi laughed and in that moment Vicky thought she finally knew what it felt like to be in love.
Her heart was beating so fast as though trying to burst out of her chest. She struggled to keep calm but how could she when her very soul had decided that he was the only one for her?
“Maybe you will be more comfortable talking to me via text?” He suggested. “Could you share your phone number?”
Vicky already knew his landline, cell phone, fax machine numbers and mailing zip code. But decided to humour him a bit. He didn’t need to know she was a cyber stalker on top of everything else.
She reached out for his phone, not trusting her mouth enough to speak again.
He smiled, handing it to her. He waited patiently as she typed in her number with shaking fingers.
“Thanks.” He said as she handed it back to him. “So I’ll send you a message. We can chat later then.”
Vicky nodded and pushed herself up the floor. She felt a bit woozy, but Levi refrained from putting a steadying hand on her shoulder.
“Come on. I’ll walk you downstairs.” He said motioning towards the door. “I sort of abandoned my date for tonight. I’d better go find her. “
Vicky felt a rising trepidation at the pit of her stomach. Of course he had a date.
She expected that. It didn’t mean anything…did it?
Suddenly they were climbing down the stairs side by side. He was guiding her steps taking care that she didn’t fall. He had a smile palying on his mouth, under better lighting his light blue t-shirt fit snugly around his chest. He was taller than her by about four inches. At one point on the stairs, she was close enough to just reach up and kiss him.
But she could barely speak to boys. Kissing them was another challenge altogether.
At the last step, Vicky was almost sorry the stairs weren’t longer. Levi paused for a bit, no doubt thinking of a way to say goodbye wihtout sounding rude.
“I’ll catch you online this weekend?” He asked.
Vicky nodded, devastated at still being tongue tied.
Just then a beautiful brunette bounded up to them her bikini top threatening to fall off.
“Levi!” She exclaimed and Vicky involuntarily stepped down from the wooden stairs and onto the living room carpet. It was time for Levi to meet up with his friends. But at least they’d exchanged numbers.
Vicky wanted to say goodbye, to wish him goodnight, to say thank you once again for saving her yet again…but as the brunette wrapped her arms around Levi’s neck and pulled him in for a deep kiss, the words died in her chest.
He gripped her back pulling her close and returning her kiss. And just like that Vicky was forgotten.
She didn’t know why she felt like crying, but she pulled out her phone and dialled.
“Dad?” She said as soon as he picked up trying to keep emotions out of her voice as she walked to the door. “I met him today Dad. Can you send someone to come get me.”
“Of course love. Wait inside till you see a bike pull up by the front door.” Said Axky.
Vicky looked outside quickly noticing that Jason’s prediction had come true. It was raining. The soft gentle pace picked up till it started to pour heavily.
Vicky didn’t try to look back towards Levi. He was in his element and it was time she returned to her own. No matter what though she would always remember the stairs at the Cromway home.
“Leaving already honey buns?” asked a boy lounging outside the door smoking a cigerette and letting out artistic rings of smoke. She neglected to respond, her eyes scanning the wet streets.
A motorbike pulled up just then. A man wearing a black leather jacket paired with dark blue jeans was driving it. His face was hidden as he was sporting sleek black helmet. Stylishly bringing the Harley Davidson to a halt, he held out a beckoning gloved hand.
Vicky rushed out immediately, the image of Levi with the brunette burning in her mind’s eye. He wasn’t hers and yet why did she feel so possessive?
“Well what do you know cinderella already has a prince. ” commented David, pressing a beer bottle against his pierced tongue.
“Damn she has good taste.” said a girl twirling her drink with a straw. “Both in men and her vehicles. Who was she anyway?”
Samthon emerged with a baking tray full of un-burnt brownies just as Levi unstuck himself long enough to see Vicky perch herself onto the bike and speed away into the rain.
He didn’t know why he kept staring as her silhouette disappeared into the night.
